Into the Clouds: My Journey to Khao Kho

Sometimes, the best trips aren’t about rushing to the famous places everyone talks about, but about finding quiet corners where the air is cool, the mountains wear a crown of mist, and the sunrise feels like a secret between you and the sky. That’s how I would describe Khao Kho—a magical highland in Phetchabun province that I had the joy of visiting with my guests

The Road to the Highlands

We left Bangkok early in the morning, the city still half asleep as we drove north. The journey itself felt like an escape—gradually trading the tall buildings and highways for rice fields, small villages, and winding mountain roads. My guests leaned back, enjoying the changing views, while I shared stories about the area.

As we climbed higher, the air turned cool and fresh. It was hard to believe we were still in Thailand—it felt like another world.

A Morning Above the Clouds

Our first morning in Khao Kho began before sunrise. We wrapped ourselves in jackets and made our way to Phu Thap Boek, one of the most famous viewpoints.

And then… magic.

The horizon blushed with soft shades of orange, and suddenly a sea of clouds spread out below us, rolling gently like waves. The mountains peeked out like islands, and we stood there, silent for a moment, just breathing it all in. My guests whispered, “This feels like heaven.” I couldn’t agree more.

A Temple in the Mist

Later that day, we visited Wat Pha Sorn Kaew, a temple that always takes my breath away no matter how many times I’ve been. Its five white Buddha statues stand tall against the mountains, while the temple walls glimmer with mosaics of colored glass and ceramics. With mist drifting around, it felt almost otherworldly—peaceful, quiet, and deeply moving.

Wind Farms and Strawberry Fields

Khao Kho is also known for its giant wind turbines, spinning gracefully in the breeze. Walking among them, with endless hills stretching around us, my guests laughed and said it felt like being in Europe.

We also stopped at a strawberry farm, where they picked fresh berries straight from the plants. Sweet, juicy, and full of sunshine—simple pleasures that make travel so special.

Evenings in the Highlands

At night, Khao Kho turned into a cozy retreat. We found a little café with mountain views, sipped hot coffee, and watched the sunset paint the hills in gold. The cool weather wrapped around us like a blanket. After the busy pace of Bangkok, it was the kind of peace we all needed.

Memories to Carry Home

Khao Kho isn’t just a destination—it’s a feeling. It’s the laughter of travelers watching clouds dance below their feet. It’s the taste of fresh strawberries and mountain-grown coffee. It’s the quiet prayer at a misty temple.

For me as a guide, the joy is always in seeing my guests light up when they discover a place like this. And Khao Kho never fails to bring that spark.
